“Make Something”

I love Dave Eggars. What I love about him is his activist nature, his DO IT philosophy, and most of all, his initiative called 826 Valencia. 826 Valencia is an after school tutorial centre that is just so incredibly smart and successful, you wonder why centres like his are not in every neighbourhood. I LOVE THIS MAN. IF you have ten minutes to spare, click here to see his video on TED Talks. You will laugh and fall in love. Today, on the Wooster Collective website, I learned about Aaron Rose and his initiative with Kanye West. They are doing for art instruction what Dave Eggars is doing for young people: helping ensure that the children of their community are not failed by their financially-strapped school system.

When the new “Make Something!” studio formally opens in Los Angeles later this year, it will definitely be the coolest after-school program in the world. Bar none. Based on the DIY “Do It Yourself” culture that has driven so much of the creativity in skateboarding, surfing, punk, hip-hop, and graffiti, “Make Something!” has the potential to completely re-invent how art and creativity is taught to school kids.
