God bless America. I love art. I’ve said it here often. But surprise: I also love bad art. Looking at what seems to me to be bad art is irresistible like watching Benny Hinn, a traffic accident or David Letterman emotionally bleeding as stand-up. When I “love” something creative, I get such a high from it, I have often thought that I don’t learn much about the art. I hedonistically am completely absorbed with the pleasure. But when something is bad, I love thinking about why it is bad and I learn, inversely, what is good. I love raving about work that i “love;” I also love ranting about work that I “hate.”
Jon McNaughton is WAY out there. Above is a pingshot of the centre of his painting “One Nation Under God?” When you visit his site (link) you can run your cursor over the painting and get referential information from him of each component of his composition. The papers on the floor in the foreground are interesting to read about using your cursor.
Just to be clear: to me this is propogandart, not art. But like a traffic accident, it is fascinating. There are amazing stories to be told in “clerical” art. I have seen my fair share. Art and religion is a fascinating thesis to pursue.
Thanks to J-Walk.
